At EcoBridge, we’re a new generation of Vancouver landscapers transforming how homeowners think about their gardens and landscaping. We favour an environmentally friendly approach, both in the materials and processes we use, creating cleaner, greener landscapes around West Vancouver’s beautiful homes.
One of the questions constantly asked is–how can I create a healthy spring garden? Although gardening is popularly considered a spring activity, the truth is that when it comes to gardening in Vancouver, the fall is one of the best times to plant hedges, trees, and shrubs.
Planting in the fall makes sense both in terms of the environment and plant biology. The cooler weather and natural rainfalls allow young plants to establish, leading to abundant growth, with gorgeous sprays of spring colour.
Vancouver autumns have a distinct weather pattern–cool mornings, warm afternoons, and cool evenings. The fiery leaves, so colourful in shades of gold and red, often overshadow the seasonal blooms. As these leaves fall and break down, they return abundant nutrients to the soil. Fall soil is often healthier and more workable. There’s less chance young plants will be scorched in increasingly longer, hotter days–and cooler temperatures reduce the need for frequent watering.
Through our experience landscaping in West Vancouver and surrounding areas, we have frequently seen how fall-dug plants outperform spring and summer-dug plants. Planting when leaves are shedding means young plants and trees can dedicate more energy to establishing healthy, abundant root networks. With plants well-established once spring arrives, plants can dedicate more energy towards top growth, leading to lovely foliage and stunning blooms.
Creating a Full and Healthy Spring Garden
If you love the idea of a full, healthy garden overflowing with colour, planting in sparse conditions makes it easier to identify the gaps in your plants. Maybe it’s time to add a few robust grasses to a certain spot–or perhaps you want to arrange for a colourful spray of spring blooms in a bed. Planting in fall makes it easy to plan out and add to your garden without potentially damaging tender shoots on established plants.
